I’M SHOCKED, WE WELCOME A PORNISH STARS AND FROWN AT INDIA’S OWN DAUGHTER: POONAM

Chronic shocker Poonam Pandey is now in shock. A political party has been pulling down the posters of her debut film Nasha. Poonam is a little hurt. ‘This has hurt me. I don’t normally allow myself to get affected. But I never expected I’d be targeted this way for my first film. It has made me nervous.

I knew I wouldn’t be welcomed with open arms into cinema. I’ve no godfather, no support from the industry. But I didn’t expect to be welcomed in this way. What have I done that is so scandalous?’

Tongue-in-cheek, Poonam lashes out at the hypocrisy of showbiz. ‘I don’t think I’ve ever crossed limits. I’ve always said more than I’ve done. I’ve seen so many posters and hoardings that are far more suggestive than mine. My posters have nothing scandalous in them. I haven’t shown my private parts.’

Poonam admits she is nervous because of the negative attention. ‘People in this country give so much respect to a pornish actress from abroad. Whereas I have never done anything that can be considered like this.

Mere jaisi bechari si lakdi ko target kiya jaa rahi hai. I have never crossed limits. Nasha is not a pornish film. It’s a proper mainstream Hindi film. Of course since I star in it there’s skin show. But that apart there is a lot to take away from the film.’

Poonam feels targeted. ‘Why me? I just feel some elements are trying to cash in on my popularity.

The doughty devil-may-care Mumbai girl maintains the image and the individual are the same. ‘What you see and read of me on the internet is what I am. It isn’t as if me and my team sat down and scripted an entirely different Poonam Pandey for the public. Main aisi hi hoon. It isn’t as if I become a different person at home. To my parent’s dismay, I am the same at home and in public.’

She laughs heartily. ‘My parents don’t like the way I conduct myself. Though I’ve been born and brought up in Mumbai, we’re from a conservative Brahmin family. My behaviour is quite shocking to my family. Lekin main kya karoon? This is the way I am.’

HOW ‘BA PASS’ COUPLE PREPARED FOR THEIR LOVE SCENES

Before shooting intimate scenes, Ajay Bahl instructed the lead actors of his next to refrain from speaking to each other. Usually before filming a lovemaking scene, the director in command hopes that his actors know each other enough to be comfortable once the cameras start rolling. But the director of the upcoming BA Pass had a slightly different plan leading to some awkward moments on the sets.

Ajay Bahl didn’t want Shilpa Shukla and Shadab Kamal to talk to each other. So much so that he once even reprimanded them for hanging out on the sets together. ‘Not only Shilpa, I even instructed the ADs (assistant directors) to stay away from Shadab.

I wanted him to feel like an outsider in the room. I have to admit that I was bit of a tyrant. No wonder I often cracked the Chak De! India dialogue: Agar iss team mei koi gunda hai toh mai hoon,’ quips the debutant filmmaker.

So what exactly was the idea behind maintaining off-screen distance between the protagonists? ‘It was for a reason. There’s no closeness as such between them in the film.

Even the physical intimacy they have is more perfunctory than anything. The attraction is basically from the guy’s end whereas Shilpa’s character Sarika is way too cold. So my plan was to make sure familiarity doesn’t seep into the frame and ruin this factor,’ sums up Ajay.

BOMBAY VELVET: HUNTING DESPERATELY FOR ANUSHKA SHARMA’S YOUNGER SELF!

The makers of Anushka Sharma’s film just cannot seem to find a child actor to play her younger self. While an upcoming film starring Anushka Sharma and Ranbir Kapoor is already underway, the makers are currently facing a stumbling block of sorts. According to sources, the producers are on the lookout for a child actor to play Anushka’s younger self, but their search hasn’t borne fruit.

A source from the film’s Sri Lanka sets says, ‘Casting director Mukesh Chhabra and rest of the team were looking for an 11-year-old girl to play young Anushka. The hunt has been on for quite some time now but so far we have not found a perfect match despite several screen tests. In fact, we have spread the word on social networking sites as well.’

With Anushka’s portions coming up in August, some of the crew members have returned to the city. And once the child actor is found, the team will resume the shoot immediately.

‘But if we are unable to finalise a young actor, we will have to push the shoot of that particular sequence to much later,’ adds the source. Mukesh remained unavailable for comment.

NASHA SURVIVES ONLY BECAUSE OF THE SEX, SLEAZE AND POONAM PANDEY

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra Bhaag Milkha Bhaag continues to dominate the boxoffice even in its third week. As expected the avalanche of Hindi releases this week has suffered a huge blow. All the new releases except to some extent Nasha and Bajatey Raho have opened to extremely poor audience attendance.

Manish Tiwary’s Issaq, an extremely interesting take on Romeo & Juliet, did invoke interest in some areas. But the savage reviews in Mumbai did its damage.

Says a prominent filmmaker, `The way Issaq was attacked in the reviews it almost seemed like a personal vendetta. And if you read the reviews of Issaq from Mumbai they all seem to make the same points over and over again.’

The most shocking boxoffice experience of the week was the rather impressive opening of Nasha. In fact in Bihar and UP Nasha was the only film that survived the Milkha maelstrom.

The post-weekend days could prove decisive for Nasha. If it continues to show an upward trend then Poonam Pandey’s movie debut would be considered a success.

Speaking on the boxoffice performance of this week’s release trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, `Nasha and Bajatey Raho are slightly better at the boxoffice than the rest. But an excess number of releases has done great harm.’

Speaking on the relative success of Nasha Taran comments, ‘Nasha was riding on the sex and Poonam Pandey. These lured the audiences in. Although ultimately Nasha is more an emotional story than a sex romp, it has some good moments. And the publicity helped.’

However Komal Nahata doesn’t think any of this week’s films did well. ‘I don’t think Nasha has survived the avalanche of releases. If it has stayed somewhat afloat it is because of the sex and sleaze only. Also, its production cost was low. Otherwise all the releases this week are sailing…sorry sinking in the same boat.’

So all said and done the real Nasha at the boxoffice this week was the latest edition of the Wolverine franchise.

Hugh Jackman proved bigger than Poonam Pandey.
